Could artificial intelligence make us less intelligent, less independent and even less employable?
AI is transforming the way we work, learn and create. But while the benefits are obvious, there is another side to the story.
In this episode of FOR & AGAINST TV, we examine the strongest arguments against artificial intelligence and ask whether our growing dependence on AI could come with some serious costs.
We explore:
• Could AI replace jobs or radically transform the way we work?
• What happens when entry-level jobs disappear and people lose opportunities to learn?
• Could relying on AI reduce critical thinking and problem-solving skills?
• Are we outsourcing too much of our memory, writing and decision-making to machines?
• Could AI make students better at finding answers but worse at remembering what they learned?
• How dangerous are AI hallucinations, misinformation and deepfakes?
• Could AI-generated content flood the internet with low-quality information?
• What happens to privacy when powerful AI systems process enormous amounts of personal data?
• Could a small number of technology companies end up controlling too much of the world's AI infrastructure?
• Will AI make the wealthy and powerful even more powerful?
• Could increased productivity actually mean more work rather than more free time?
• What happens to human skills when machines can do more of the thinking for us?
The evidence is complicated.
AI could create enormous productivity gains, improve education and create new opportunities. But research is also raising important questions about job disruption, cognitive offloading, critical thinking, misinformation, privacy, inequality and our growing dependence on technology.
So perhaps the biggest question isn't:
“Will AI replace humans?”
Maybe it's:
“What happens when humans become too dependent on AI?”
Has AI made you more capable, or more dependent?
